Basically she was betrothed to Arthur before she met Lancelot. She married the man who would become King, but later met and loved the favourite knight instead of her husband. She wasn't a bad woman, but the love wouldn't be denied and they had an ongoing, sometimes troubled affair that Arthur turned a blind eye to. Until that is, the affair was publically revealed and Lancelot fled the condemnation. To Arthur's deep regret he was forced to sentence his wife to burn at the stake for adultery. Lancelot rescued her however, and Guinevere didn't die for her crimes. She did regret what had happened though, especially as her actions contributed to the fall of Arthur's court and the decline of Camelot. As a result of her guilt, she regretfully left Lancelot and lived out the rest of her days in a nunnery while Lancelot went into exile.
